Preface
GB/T 4340 Metallic materials — Vickers Hardness Test is categorized into the
following four parts:
— Part 1: Test method
— Part 2: Inspection and Calibration
— Part 3: Specification of standard hardness block
— Part 4: Vickers hardness value table
This section indicates to GB/T 4340 Part 1.
Modification of this section refers to ISO 6507-1, 2005 Metallic materials —
Vickers Hardness Test Part 1: Test Method (English version).
In view of the actual situation in China, this section undergoes due modification
and supplementation upon second draft in reference to ISO 6507-1, 2005. Technical
difference was marked in the margins of terms involved with vertical single line.
This section is substantially equivalent to the ISO 6507-1, 2005 in terms of
structure and technology-related content. However, in consideration of national
condition in China, the following aspects are modified:
— Preface of ISO 6507-1, 2005 is deleted.
— “This International Standard” is changed into “This section”.
— The coma “,” used as decimal point “.” is replaced by the latter.
— Instruction on test force of Micro Vickers Hardness is added.
— Instruction on time error controlled in test force of special materials is added.
— Measurement uncertainty of hardness value in Appendix D of original ISO
6507-1, 2005 is modified.
This section is substituted for GB/T 4340.1—1999 Metallic materials — Vickers
Hardness Test Part 1: Test Method. Modifications go to the following contents
compared with original standards.
— Requirement for diagonal in the field of view under lens is added;
— Planar Vickers hardness Table of GB/T 4340.1—1999 Metallic materials —
Vickers Hardness Test Part 1: Test Method is separately named as Metallic materials –
— Vickers Hardness Test Part 4: Hardness value Table;
— Instruction for uncertainty of results is added;
— Informative Appendix D (measurement uncertainty of hardness value) is added.
In this section, Appendixes A and B are normative; Appendixes A and B are
informative.
This section is proposed by China Iron and Steel Association.
Thissection undergoes centralized management by National Steel Standardization
Technical Committee.
This section is drafted by units including Iron and Steel Research Institute,
Shougang Corporation Technology Research Institute, Metallurgical Industry

Metallic materials — Vickers Hardness Test
Part 1: Test Method - Scope
This section of GB/T 4340 specifies Vickers Hardness Test in terms of principle,
symbols and description, test equipment, samples, test procedures, uncertainty of
results and test report.
This section stipulates measurement methods of metallic Vickers hardness test in
conformity with three scopes of test force (See Table 1).
